- mod_perl server architecture done right as presented at the London Perl Workshop
Yes I still do all the geek stuff. Which broadly breaks down as:
- Consulting as a "virtual" CTO or at the CTO level.
- Hosting and web server farms: from finding appropriate suppliers
to setting up load-balanced, resilient clusters mostly using Linux,
Apache, Perl, MySQL, Postgres, Squid and so on.
- Server farm optimisation: you've got a site that's getting lots
of hits and performance has suffered. I can generally, very quickly
spot where the problem is and get it fixed. It could be anywhere
between poor ISP connectivity at the front end through to poor
database setup at the back.
- Anything else: Office LANs, server monitoring, security, VPNs, VoIP. Even if I don't have specific expertise, I'm almost certain to know someone who does.
