Those opinions were pretty evenly spread. With help, I chose 7 to be printed. The prints were on “Kodak Digital Royal” paper, for what that’s worth. Here are the results:

1. Lush. That’s all!
2. Spot on. The detail of the people at the end of the corridor is excellent
5. Pretty good. If I were to rework it, I’d try to make the wall behind the cab of the bike much lighter, there’s not enough contrast.
8. About as I expected. The shadow detail is good, as is what can be seen near the highlights.
9. Disappointing. I expected the brickwork to be have much more contrast. The detail of the couple under the umbrella is good though.
11. Utterly gorgeous: the low res on-screen version doesn’t do it justice. The fibres of the bamboo leaves are very crisp and the string has a nice soft quality.
12. Much better than I expected. The texture of the road and the crossing are very nice with plenty of detail in the background.

In summary, I’d say it’s well worth printing. When I get back to the UK I’ll definitely print 6″x4″ before committing to larger prints and send those larger prints out to The Printspace or Photobox to be done properly. I was pleasantly surprised at how much small detail was preserved.

Dragon Boat Race Xindian, Taipei

Dragon boat races on Green Lake, Xiandian, Taipei.

This is the decisive moment when the flag puller lost her balance and fell in!

It’s a holiday in Taiwan, so the lakeside was heaving with folks having a good family day out, eating fried food on a stick and fighting the heat with cold drinks and umbrellas.

A feature of Taiwanese dragon boat racing is the “flag puller” at the prow of the boat. If the flag isn’t retrieved, the boat is disqualified.

It’s also “rice triangle” day, and some Daoist festival where grownups drink spirit infused with Sulphur. Don’t ask!

This picture is not tweaked at all, it’s exactly how it came out of the camera.

Cacilhas is on the opposite side of the Tagus to Lisbon and has its own decrepit charm. There’s a long stretch of derelict warehouses between the ferry terminal and the old town which are just gagging to be redeveloped into restaurants and bars.

Oh, it’s lovely.

If you ever go to Lisbon, go to Sintra. Fairytale castle and amazing wooded grounds. Something to do with Byron. They took hilly scrubland and afforested it with trees and ferns from around the world and now it’s the sort of place elves would hang out.

Spotted these in a grimy cornershop at the base of an apartment block in Lisbon. First impression is a definite mushroom overtone and a deep inhalation gives quite an intense cream of mushroom soup essence, maybe one of those cubes you make soup from. From then on though, it’s downhill. The overwhelming impressions is of very musty salt. Not a sensation.

The overall background smell in Lisbon, besides the occasional overwhelming sulphurous pong of sewers, is grilled sardines.

However, rounding a corner, I was assaulted by the really strong smell of pee. Initially, I suspected the seedy looking men lounging around but then realised it was the blossom from these trees whose honeyed scent carried a faint ammoniac overtone.
